Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) will implement a grade configuration change at Abbeydale, Patrick Airlie, Cappy Smart, Penbrooke Meadows, Roland Michener, Radisson Park, James Short Memorial, G.W. Skene, Dr. Gladys McKelvie Egbert and Ernest Morrow Schools starting for the 2024-25 school year. These changes will help balance enrolment between schools in the Area and allow more students to attend schools closer to home.

Grade Configuration Changes at James Short Memorial School:

• James Short Memorial School will expand from a kindergarten to Grade 2 school to a kindergarten to Grade 3 school for the 2024-25 school year.
• This means current Grade 2 students will remain at James Short Memorial School in the 2024-25 school year.

Grade Configuration Changes at G.W. Skene School:

• G.W. Skene School will change from a Grade 3 to 5 school to a Grade 4 to 6 school for both designated communities of Applewood Park and Penbrooke Meadows in the 2024-25 school year.
• This means current Grade 5 students will remain at G.W. Skene School in the 2024-25 school year. Current Grade 5 students residing in the Penbrooke Meadows community will transition to Ernest Morrow School for Grade 7 in the 2025-26 school year and current Grade 5 students residing in the Applewood Park community will transition to Dr. Gladys McKelvie Egbert School for Grade 7 in the 2025-26 school year.

• Abbeydale School will expand from a kindergarten to Grade 5 school to a kindergarten to Grade 6 school in the 2024-25 school year.
• This means current Grade 5 students will remain at Abbeydale School for the 2024-25 school year.

Grade Configuration Changes at Patrick Airlie School:

• Patrick Airlie School will expand from a kindergarten to Grade 5 school to a kindergarten to Grade 6 school in the 2024-25 school year.
• This means current Grade 5 students will remain at Patrick Airlie School for the 2024-25 school year.

Grade Configuration Changes at Cappy Smart School:

• Cappy Smart School will expand from a kindergarten to Grade 5 school to a kindergarten to Grade 6 school for the 2024-25 school year.
• This means current Grade 5 students will remain at Cappy Smart School for the 2024-25 school year.

Grade Configuration Changes at Penbrooke Meadows School:

• Penbrooke Meadows School will expand from a kindergarten to Grade 5 school to a kindergarten to Grade 6 school for the 2024-25 school year.
• This means current Grade 5 students will remain at Penbrooke Meadows School for the 2024-25 school year.  

Grade Configuration Changes at Roland Michener School:

• Roland Michener School will expand from a kindergarten to Grade 5 school to a kindergarten to Grade 6 school for the 2024-25 school year.
• This means current Grade 5 students will remain at Roland Michener School in the 2024-25 school year. Specialized setting classes will also be expanded to include Grade 6 students. 

Grade Configuration Changes at Radisson Park School:

• Radisson Park School will expand from a kindergarten to Grade 5 school to a kindergarten to Grade 6 school for the 2024-25 school year.
• This means current Grade 5 students will remain at Radisson Park School in the 2024-25 school year.

Grade Configuration Changes at Dr. Gladys McKelvie Egbert School:

• Dr. Gladys McKelvie Egbert School will change from a Grade 6 to 9 school to a Grade 7 to 9 school in the 2024-25 school year. The specialized setting classes at Dr. Gladys McKelvie Egbert will align with the grade configuration changes.

• Ernest Morrow School will change from a Grade 6 to 9 school to a Grade 7 to 9 school in the 2024-25 school year. The specialized setting classes at Ernest Morrow School will align with the grade configuration changes.

Why is this change happening?

The CBE is experiencing record enrolment growth. To address this, changes are being made to balance enrolment across our schools. These changes will help alleviate current and anticipated enrolment pressures in east and northeast Calgary while allowing more students to attend school closer to home.

How do I register for school next year?

Kindergarten registrations for the 2024-25 school year begin on Jan. 15, 2024. For more information on how to register, please visit our website.

How will students get to school?

Students are eligible for transportation to their designated or overflow school if they live beyond the walk zone. Families must visit Busing & Transportation for important information on transportation services. Families must register for transportation if they want to use the service using MyCBE.  

In the CBE and across the city, we are experiencing a school bus driver shortage that may impact the mode of service provided. Please be assured that we are doing everything possible and working with our partners to restore reliability to transportation services.
